John Browning
John, formerly a coach at two NCAA Division III institutions, was
appointed the Director of Tennis/Head Men's Tennis Coach at Emory
University in the summer of 1999.
In 2003, Browning's team won the NCAA national team championship.
In the three seasons prior, his teams advanced to the NCAA finals
once and the quarterfinals twice, finished in the top-five in the
national rankings three times and won three conference championships.
His Emory career record stands at 52-16 (.765).
For the previous five years, Browning was the men's and women's
tennis head coach at Salisbury State University (Md.). Prior to
that, he spent three years as the head men's tennis coach at Pomona-Pitzer
Colleges (Calif.) and one year as an assistant men's tennis coach
at University of California-Santa Cruz. His overall career coaching
record for men and women combined is 188-87 (.684) in 11 years.
In his last four years at Salisbury State, the men's teams finished
in the top 25 nationally and won the Capital Athletic Conference
(CAC) title. They were 15th in the nation in the final ranking of
NCAA Division III teams in 1996, 8th in 1997, 25th in 1998 and 18th
in 1999. Browning was the NCAA Division III South Region Coach of
the Year in 1997, and a three-time CAC Coach of the Year.
In addition to his coaching, Browning was director of the indoor
tennis center at Salisbury State. His duties included supervision
of a facility renovation plan, creating a membership program, developing
a fee structure for members and guests, design and installation
of a pro shop, setting up league play, scheduling private and group
lessons, and hiring and training 15 employees.
At Pomona-Pitzer, Browning's teams placed fourth in the final national
rankings in 1992, 10th in 1993 and ninth in 1994.
As a player at the University of California-Santa Cruz, Browning
was a member of the NCAA national championship team in 1989.
Browning is a 1990 graduate of California-Santa Cruz where he received
his bachelor's degree. He completed his master's degree at Azusa
Pacific University in 1994.
Browning also is responsible for developing Emory's new tennis
complex at the Clairmont campus which opened in January 2003.
